We recently stayed in a beachfront villa at BASK Hotel for our honeymoon and, while the overall hotel grounds are undeniably wonderful and the food was really good, we expected a much higher standard of luxury and service for over $500 USD a night in Indonesia. Comparing it to other 5-star properties in the area like The Sira, several aspects fell short of expectations: Food Quality vs. Breakfast Policy: The food itself was delicious and high quality. However, the "breakfast included" rate is quite restrictive - it only covers one main dish, fruit, bread, and two drinks. If you want a second coffee, a smoothie, or something sweet to finish, you always have to pay extra. Lack of Privacy: There is a public street and walkway running directly in front of all the beachfront villas, and the surrounding bushes fail to provide adequate privacy. Villa Amenities & Service: Disappointingly, there was no outdoor shower at the villa or in the pool area. Additionally, while turndown service was explicitly promised to us at reception during check-in, it was never actually provided. We also experienced an active construction site within the hotel grounds during our stay. Beach & Day Visitors: The beach was not very clean. Furthermore, an art piece placed in the water right off the beach attracts a lot of day tourists, meaning the area is often packed and loses its secluded feel. Inconveniences & Extra Costs: Gym access requires booking time slots, which means guests can reserve prime morning slots (like 7:00 AM) for the entire week and block others from using it. On top of that, bicycle and snorkeling equipment rentals come at an extra cost. Special Occasions: We informed the hotel ahead of time that it was our honeymoon, but unfortunately, no special touches or recognition were provided. While the culinary offerings, architecture, and grounds have great potential, for this price point, we expected these operational and privacy issues to be ironed out. Other 5-star hotels in Indonesia offer far more inclusive services and attention to detail.
