Amazing food, great staff and a lovely atmosphere. We had a lovely chat with the chef before we left and had gave us some great tips. Would highly recommend.

We enjoyed our meal at the House this evening. We had the parsnip soup, aranchini and pate to start, then the hake, liver and pork. All well cooked and attractively plated.

Hilly Gant in Braintree is a welcome upmarket option in the area. The a la carte menu is compact but good, and it's great to have the option of a separate vegan menu. The restaurant itself is lovely and full of character, and the staff are friendly. Food quality has varied on different visits, and it’s quite pricey — our two-course meal for four with drinks came to £290 — but overall it’s a nice experience.

We visited The House by Hilly Gant and ordered a burger and a Sunday dinner roast, and overall the experience was very enjoyable. The food was truly excellent. The roast in particular stood out: the meat was juicy, tender, and perfectly cooked, without those chewy or rubbery parts you sometimes encounter. The roast potatoes were well seasoned, full of flavour, and the vegetables were cooked al dente, exactly as they should be. Because my wife does not enjoy frozen, bagged fries, we kindly asked the waitress if there was any alternative available (hand-cut chips, roast potatoes, or something similar). She was extremely helpful and checked with the kitchen, and everything was arranged beautifully. We were fully prepared to pay extra, understanding that fresh, hand-cut potatoes cost more than frozen ones, but we were pleasantly surprised that no extra charge was added. This gesture spoke volumes about their approach to service and care for the customer. The gravy was described as homemade, and while it had a very good depth of flavour, it was slightly on the salty side for our personal taste—purely a matter of preference. The atmosphere was pleasant, though we did feel a bit cold inside. With the outside temperature around -1°C, some heating would have made the experience more comfortable. We noticed another guest at a nearby table keeping their coat and hood on, so it wasn’t just us—but this is a minor point. Parking is available at Tesco nearby (£6.00), which may be worth noting. There are also a few free spaces on the street, but they fill up quickly. One thing we genuinely appreciated is that there is no forced service charge, which has become increasingly common elsewhere. You are free to decide based on your experience. After such a positive visit, we were more than happy to leave a service charge of our own choosing, as a thank you for the overall experience. The restaurant is well organised, portions are generous, and the quality of the food is clearly a priority. Overall, it was a very good experience, and we would happily return.

Had our wedding reception dinner there, it was all pre-booked and planned (obviously) and the staff were very accommodation to our requirements in the run up to the day. The food, service, and atmosphere were all 5 star's, I can wait to eat there again.

We have dined here foot 4 Christmas Eves and it was by far the most disappointing. The plates were cold and requested them to be warmed. The service was slow and not particularly friendly. Although the food was good we have had better food and service previously. The Christmas fairy lights were not switched on and the restaurant was cold. Such a shame - We will not be back sadly

Another lovely evening at The House with Rob and his team. Food and drink fabulous as ever. Great to see Rob and chat about the town and business. Keep up the great work
A restaurant on New Street in Braintree, open since 2015 and holding two AA Rosettes. The kitchen cooks seasonal dishes from locally sourced produce, and the restaurant also takes private celebrations and outside catering.

The House by Hilly Gant has a score of 4.6 out of 5, labelled Excellent, from 556 reviews on TheReviews and its connected review sites. The score comes from one published formula: every business starts at 3.5 with the weight of 3 reviews, verified reviews weigh 1.0, organic reviews 0.7, and each review loses half its weight every year. Ratings on connected sites such as Google or Booking.com are blended in at 0.5 per review, together never outweighing 50 verified reviews, and every review counts towards how sure the score is, so many reviews elsewhere are not held back by the starting point. That places it 4 of 7 in Food & Drink. Read the formula with a worked example.
None yet, because nobody has written a review on TheReviews. A verified review comes through an invitation tied to a real order or through the API. Organic reviews, written by anyone with a confirmed account, count for 0.7 of a verified one.
There are no reviews on TheReviews to reply to yet. The profile is unclaimed; once the business claims it, it can reply to every review free of charge.
